I dunno if this can happen, but I'm pretty sure that a press on the
reset button is shutting it down properly.
So you may do the counter-test by shutting it down whith a needle
after your train ride...

It's still possible that the battery has a problem. Certainly not due
to simple age, as you pointed out, but LiIon-Batteries do not like the
cold, for example.
I've been told about batteries having lost a major part of the
capacity (irreparable) after having spend a frosty night in a car and
it's a common problem that cold batteries can not supply the same
power than warm ones.

The current bootloader does not yet charge from usb. It's planned, but
not yet realized (as the startup on charger plug-in is)
One possibility is, as you pointed out, to start the unit with
rec+play, so the original iriver firmware is started which charges
from usb.
