If the unit is set to allow charging by USB the whole display panel
should turn on with a rather large 'charging' indicator. Hard to miss.

If your player isn't configured to charge via USB, the display should
stay off. If the unit powers on from the 'play' button, plugging the USB
cord in right away should put the unit into data mode.
