Barry, the good news is that it sounds to me like you have gotten the
bootloader installed. What you describe is exactly what happens when
the bootloader boots and then fails to find the firmware. Try
reinstalling a Rockbox build. If you can get sighted assistance again,
make sure that there is a file called "rockbox.iriver" and a folder
called ".rockbox" in the root directory of the player.
