That reminds me, I could boot up with GRML on a CD and format it as well.

Swissknife failed a few times now, and I don't know why.
This week, a new version of the Gparted-Live-CD was released. That
means that you can download this 30MB image, burn it to a cd, boot
from that CD and format the archos with that.
