Also, make sure that you do a thorough scan.
Press alt + enter on the drive as it appears in "my computer" and control +
tab once to "tools" and enter on disk repair, or whatever it is called, it
is the top option in the window.
Be sure to check both items with the space bar to ensure a thorough scan.
It is slightly different in 98.

This sounds like your hard drive has bad sectors. Try to copy the data
in small chunks, directory by directory. Then you might be able to save
as much as possible.
Then, do a scan for bad sectors on the drive.
