My brothers iriver's arrived in the post.

Now, I don't want to look like I'm forcing rockbox on him, so my
questions is:

Can the original firmware record from mic as a wav? (I've had a look,
and can't seems to find an option anywhere - anywhere obvious at least...)

If it can't then I have to put rockbox on (he's a musician and likes to
make 'field' recordings).
If it can, then Iwill have to think of other reasons! (apart from
Spacerocks)
