Oh, I went and set it short, figured it would save battery life since I don't need it anyways.

  Brent,
I think that your problem was because the back light was set to come on too quickly, and the first press would not activate the menus.
The first press was just turning on the back light again.
You can change the back light to go out with a longer delay.
I have had mine set like this, with a long delay, for so long now, I don't remember if the menu button can turn on the back light, or if only the navi button can do that.

What I mean is on my 120, even after booting, I have to hit the navi button to hit the file browser first, otherwise the menu key doesn't do anything, at least no voice comes from it.

I don't know what happens if one presses the menu button on start-up.
It seems obvious that one would wait until it finishes booting before opening the menus.

I had to get to the file browser on my 120 before menus would speak. I figured this out by encoding 3 minutes of silence to a 64k mp3 file that I really thought I had to be playing something to get the menus, but after turning on the file speech, you need only be in the browser before you press menu. Pressing it from startup does nothing, at least on the 120.

      Hi again Dan,
I don't know if you tried the menus, but it will not talk until you open the menus.
If you don't get it talking in the menus:
Try pressing the reset button, I believe it is on the top left side of your unit, below the Mic.
Also, you might have a sighted person go into the menus, and go into settings, and reset the unit to the rockbox defaults.
      HTH.

      Hello again users.
I forgot to add that we placed the
      english.voice in the langs directory.
This should have been in the previous message.

        Hello Rockbox users,
        I am totally blind.
With help from my son, that's sighted, we followed the instructions, I beleive to the letter to load Rockbox on my Iriver H320.
But, it doesn't come up talking.
We used the patcher for the international .hex file:
        H300jp-v128.zip
        The patcher program said successful.
And, he updated the firmware on the unit successfully as it shut itself off.
I then extracted the folder and file from:
        rockbox-h300-20061103.zip
We placed them on the root directory.
We then unplugged the power and usb cords.
When starting up, the boot screen says iriver.
I have double checked the manuals and have glanced through the archives and I'm stumped.
Anyone have an answer for me please?
        Thanks for any help, Dan
