What about the file:
Rockbox.nano?
I don't know much about the iPod ports, but maybe you need to check for that file.
Does anyone know if all the iPods use that file?

  Does the installer install everything, or just the bootloader. If it's just the bootloader, you still need a daily build. Get a recent one for your player and extract it to the root. And install a voice file with the appropriate language to the .rockbox\langs folder. That should do the trick.
  If you're not sure whether you have a daily build, see if there's a folder called .rockbox (that's a period followed by the word rockbox) and a file called rockbox.nano. If you don't, it means you need to install a daily build.
