Hi John, seems to be not the HDD, I had the same problem: simply resolder the IDE connector at the upper pcb. The battery spring force is really high so that the board will bend like hell and the outer soldering points from the IDE connector cannot hold against. Or, try at first to squeeze the box in that way you would press the batteries in every battery pack together against the contacts .
