Thanks Anna - that sounds like the thing I need. One Q though, some books come on multiple MP3 (usually one for each chapter), would this mean that that strategy wouldn't work?

  I can't answer most of your questions, but I can answer the one about keeping your place in books. You need the bookmark feature. This feature keeps your place in a folder, not a file, so each book should be in its own folder. Then set Rockbox to create a bookmark on stop and pause, and turn on Load Last bookmark. Then whenever you select a file, Rockbox will start playing where it left off in the folder.
