The recording function on PortalPlayer is far, far from complete.

On the X5 and the iRiver H100 and H300 series, as well as on the Archoses,
it is much better, more reliable, and very consistent for most people.
Please be careful making sweeping statements like that. A line in does
require a line level, which means you'll need some sort of amplification.
