I've implemented this as a patch at
http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/7249. Perhaps you (and any other
interested parties) could give it a go and see if it does what you expect.

I'd like to commit this soon, but don't want to cause any unneeded confusion
for visually impaired users.
