Rockbox mail archiveSubject: Speex on Cowen & iriverSpeex on Cowen & iriver

Date: Thu, 29 Nov 2007 15:23:03 -0700 Hey everyone, Rockbox newbie here, still shopping for the best player to buy, and I'm mainly looking at either a Toshiba Gigabeat or Cowen iAudio, or maybe an iriver. The main draw to the Gigabeat for me right now is that on the SoundCodecs page it's the only player that support realtime speex. The main drawback to the Gigabeat is that as I've looked around over the past couple days, I can't find *any* 60GB models for sale, only 40GB. On the other hand, I have been able to find 60GB Cowen iAudio players, and the Cowen has a couple other nice features (recording, FM radio); but those features aren't really important to me, and the Cowen seems to not be capable of realtime speex playback, which is somewhat important IMO. So my questions are, how close to realtime are the Cowen (and iriver) _at_ speex decoding? Is it possible that at some point in the future they might be optimised to be capable of realtime speex decoding? And if they will never be capable of realtime decoding, how well would they be able to play large speex files (AudioBooks, for example)? Thanks in advance, Conway S.
