Unfortunately, the album titles are "Who the fuck is Sandro Oliva?!?"
and "Why do you think you arf?" (they are really those ones, I'm not
jocking), and those question marks are forbidden for a FAT32 fs.
So I have to rename the album art bitmap name, _and also_ the content
of the ID3 to allow matching.

How would you solve it? ;-)

The link you referred to:
http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/AlbumArt does tell you how
invalid characters are handled by rockbox:
"The following characters will be replaced with an underscore (_) when
looking for albumtitle.bmp: \ / : < > ? * |. Double quotes will be
replaced by singlequotes."

So (although I have not personally tried this), that should provide the
answer.

i.e. Who the fuck is Sandro Olivia_!_.bmp
and Why do you think you arf_.bmp

*should* work. Unless the arf was a typo 8). Perhaps one or more of the
listed tools (same link) will do en masse renaming of the bmp files for
you?
