First of all, I'd suggest running chkdsk /f from the command line --
from my experience that works much better (i.e. is more reliably) than
the graphical scandisk. Second, if the gui process isn't responding
anymore you could try closing it using the context menu of the task
bar entry. Maybe the process got stuck itself. You could also kill it
using the task manager.
