as the documentation says only mpeg2 is supported. This information is
up to date. By the way, avi is not a format but a container -- for
"proper" avi support quite a lot of codecs would be needed. But as you
need to transcode the video to fit your screen anyway there isn't much
sense in supporting other formats.
