                I can separate the power from the player in my goal and
have two separate devices.

                Do you know of a 'crankable' power source like the one
in MintyBoost that would use crank power instead of battery power but
still have the same adapter to plug the mp3 into?

Hi,

I suspect you'll have problems with item 2, but it would be possible to
make some sort of crank-powered USB charger for any MP3 player that will
recharge from a powered but disconnected USB port (e.g. anything that
works with MintyBoost <http://www.ladyada.net/make/mintyboost/> ).
Consider that separately and all you're looking for is a decent cheap
MP3 player, which should be easier.
