I think people who wrote the manual are happy when someone reads it
rather than when someone ignores it and just expects he we'll get a
quick answer.

Of course manuals can be very large, so pointing to a specific part of
the manual where the expected answer is is better than just "rtfm".

I do agree that for those concerns that require a detailed explanation, one
should be seeking out the manuals. Most of them are freaking excellent and
very accessible to boot!

I know a proverb which I think applies here:

Give a fish to a man and he'll not be hungry today.
Learn him how to fish and he'll never be hungry again.
