It sounds like the battery is dying.

The Archos V1 uses four standard AA NiHM batteries that are housed in the vertical "tubes" on either side of the screen. The tubes are simple plastic battery covers that you can pry open with your bare fingers. There are two AA batteries in each "tube".

Btw: It would be great if those who are blind could mention that when asking questions. It makes a big difference in how to formulate responses.
