I didn't find it to be all that difficult with eBay (acknowledging that not
all sellers will ship to Canada, etc.).

When I decided I wanted an e280 V1 for Rockbox, I contacted five different
sellers, asking them to tell me the firmware version (with instructions on
how to find it). Four of them replied.
