The bad news: No, it isn't. They don't have much in common at all.
Completely different hardware. Completely different encryption.

The good news: There are people (including me) trying to get Rockbox
running on the iPod Classic. Even though we aren't quite there yet, I'm
pretty confident that there will be a Rockbox port for it one day, as
the big roadblocks (firmware encryption etc.) have already been taken
care of.

One thing I can already tell you for certain is that it won't matter
much if you get the 80GB/120GB/new 160GB (3G, currently available from
Apple) version. The old (thick, 2007) 160GB version might be a bit more
tricky, I would avoid that one for now ;)
