I have contributed to the Mesa3D X11 code a long time ago, and I know for sure
it's very robust, and handles all screen configuration (even old X terminals
with only 1bpp!).
However, I don't have time right now for this either...

IMHO, it may be a lot more simple to write an SDL driver from scratch than to
play with the X11 driver. X11 is a 20 years old design!
