The version option in the system menu briefly shows the rockbox version
and build date and then starts showing the credits (list of people who
contributed to rockbox). Showing the credits actually seems to be the
main function.

As far as I know, this functionality if implemented as a plugin.
Maybe this is also why the version is not voiced, I don't know exactly.
