Since you've been trying to make partial approximations the whole time,
how does it give you a guide? And, unless your item is near the end (in
which case you should be coming from the bottom up instead) aren't you
likely to know you've missed it by stopping and hearing some filename
after your target quite some time before you get to the end of the
listing? It still sounds like the beep is something you'll only hear if
you're searching for something in a more inefficient way than necessary.
