For me, it is a personal preference. I don't like //-comments. Like I have
personal preferences for where the braces should be and so on. And having a
unified look and style on the code is helpful.

As for C99 features, such as long long, dynamic array sizes and initing
structs with named fields, I think they're fine to use in Rockbox.
