I had a go but to be honest I couldn't hear a difference when I tried
the following:

- listen to a transition loud jingle -> speech
- up limiter preamp by 8db
- reduce volume by 8db
- listen again

Subjectively it seemed to be the same. This was for standard mp3 not
replay-gained.
