completed first rockbox build with vinux virtual machine

Hi list.

For some time now, I have been working on compiling rockbox code using a
virtual machine, running a flavour of linux that is designed for the
visually impaired straight out of the box, negating the need to use cygwin
with all the headakes installing that brings as well as very slow voice
building and compilation times.

Last time I was in touch with the list, I was encountering a lot of problems
getting the code to compile outside the virtual machine, as I want to keep
it on windows rather than on the vm itself..

However, I finally got all of those straightened out, it involved tweaking
the cifs settings a bit, and also making some changes to windows.

I am happy to report that I completed my first successful rockbox build for
an h140 using vinux around half an hour ago.
The build took slightly over 5 minutes to complete.

My next challenge is to get the virtual disc to shrink, as at the moment
after installing the toolchain it is 3.10 gb.

I guess this also means I can get set up as a build server now as well.
does it matter how slow my builds are? As I know build times were important
under the old system, however if I understand the way the new build system
works, speed of individual clients is not as important as it once was.

eventually I hope to make my machine publicly available, and if there is
demand for it I would be happy to put together some kind of guide for the
wiki outlining how I got everything to work as it was very frustrating at
times.

I am also going to look into building rockbox voices with sapi through
vinux, as there is a project that is ongoing to allow linux to make use of
windows based sapi voices, eventually my hope is to do away with cygwin
completely.
