If I revert 29992, I then fail with the following error:

Guess I need a newer gcc - am running 3.4.4 (cygming special, gdc 0.12,
using dmd 0.125). Last time I tried to get gcc4 working ujnder Cygwin (a
couple of months ago) there were plenty of problems; guess I should try
again?
