Disclaimer: I'm more of a user than a dev.

In my opinion, it should rather be fixed so that you can use the remote
to control the menus as you can use the device. On my iriver, it's
implemented like that. The remote is equivalent to having the main
device, which is kinda handy outside.

Applying your patch would make the remote useless for anything beyond
playback control, which is not what I expect it to do. Just my two
cents, as said, I'm not a dev.
