It's been a while since this issue came up. There is a possibility that it started after or somewhere around r23582. I hope this info helps.

So here is how you recreate the problem. You go into the sound options while a song is playing, go to pitch, and turn the pitch down to something like %80. You can hear the clicks and pops in sound right there. These clicks and pops continue for a short period of time, like 30 seconds. Then they stop.
