FS#12031 - iPod Nano 2G Freezing on USB / Charging

I have two iPod Nano 2Gs with the following problems, which are still present even on the latest stable build of 3.8 and latest daily build as of March 27th, 2011:

When Rockbox is first installed, immediately following a firmware reset in iTunes, the USB disk mode of rockbox works perfectly, as does wall charging using a USB adapter.

After one or two sessions of using disk mode or charging, neither one works. When I plug my nano 2g into my macbook pro, the rockbox shows a picture of a plug, but the status bar up top is missing and the computer does not recognize the disk. Rockbox is frozen, I have to do a menu+select reset.

The same behavior happens when I try to plug the rockbox in to charge.

This behavior was reportedly fixed in task 10894: http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/10894 However, note that the rockbox works fine for the first one or two connects, but stops working thereafter, so it might be that the ticket was erroneously closed. Also, I am aware that not all Nano 2G devices have this issue. I have owned one Nano 2G in the past that worked fine.

In order to get the rockbox to work again, I have to do a firmware reinstall using iTunes, and reinstall rockbox. But then rockbox only works for one or two connects before the problematic behavior resurfaces.

I am willing to help with testing to help resolve this bug.

Should be fixed by the new USB stack.

Do I understand correctly that you need to re-install rockbox? A simple hard reset (pressing OK + MENU for several seconds) does not work?

Hi,

Pressing OK + MENU will restart my rockbox, but the rockbox USB disk access and AC charging (even with a wall charger) will still be impaired after a restart. In order to charge or access my files, I need to restart in Apple Disk Mode.

The only thing that temporarily improves the situation is restoring my iPod using iTunes and then re-installing Rockbox. The rockbox disk mode and charging will work temporarily for one or two sessions, but soon it will start freezing again as soon as I plug it in.

Thanks

if anyone thinks they can solve this bug, I’ll ship them a problematic ipod nano 2g for free. =)

Hi, i had similar trouble on my ipod classic, and have a patch that seems to fix it for me so could you please test  FS#12083 ?

I had a very similar issue (originally reported here: http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/12197)

When I try to prevent the ipod from connecting to the computer by holding down a key as I plugged in the device, the ipod freezes after about 1-2 seconds and requires a hard reset (Menu+Select). It doesn’t seem to matter which key I hold down.

This happens consistently, but I don’t seem to suffer any corruption. Also, Disk Mode works fine, it is only when I try to put it in Charging Mode that it freezes.

Hum as of now, I do still have the same problem reported by menachem shapiro. Moreover the ipod2g is not stable anymore from release 3.11 on, so I’m stuck with my version 3.9.

To sum it up, Disk Mode works fine, but when put in Charging Mode it freezes invariably, and I have to do a hard reset.
