FS#6175 - iPod Video won't boot after shutdown - (false) low battery

I am using the most current cvs firmware build for the ipod video as of this post (i believe it is 061012).

Sometimes (not every time for some reason… still testing to find out when exactly it happens) after shutting down the ipod from within rockbox, it will not turn on again, complaining of a low battery (it shows the low battery warning once and then does not respond after that to the power button).

This is actually an incorrect report - the battery is approximately half full.

However, pushing and holding both the center button and the menu button whilst it is off “resets” the ipod (even though it is turned off) and it successfully boots into rockbox and works fine.

The original problem is an apple problem, nothing we can do about. When switching on the Apple bootloader is started, and this starts the Rockbox booloader. If there is a low battery symbol it's not Rockbox related.

The comments note different issues that have nothing to do with the original task. Additionally, this is not a support channel. People searching for help like in the comments are required to use our support channels, linked from the website.

I experienced exactly the same problem today myself. Battery is (almost) fully charged but ipod would not turn on (I got Apple’s low battery icon flashing briefly, and then the unit turned off again - but from this point onward unresponsive to attempts to power it on again). Resetting the ipod (holding select+menu) brought the unit back to life. It is not obvious to me whether this is just a flaw in RetailOS (since battery has plenty of charge) or if it is somehow related to precisely how Rockbox implements the shut down.

I’m experiencing the exact same problem on an iPod 4G grayscale.

Well it appears that it is a common problem then (at least repeatable).

Any developers got any ideas as to the source of this problem?

Cheers

Have updated to the latest source… still happening… no ideas why yet… its one of those bugs that is hard to find the source - anyone got any ideas?

This has started for me too
not always though think perhaps only after mains charging
will investigate to try and confirm this
i belive this charging method is the only way to maximise
the input power
rockbox boots when connected to the mains that is still something that needs? to be sorted
but it could be this that is now brocken

I am using RockBox with an iPod Video (first gen) 30 Gb since one month already and I shut it down oftenly and never had this problem. Maybe this is because I am using iPodLoader 2 (from iPodLinux) which works extremely well with RockBox.

I’m got a 5G 60 gig iPod (video). I’ve had the same problem- I’ve noticed it only *when I’ve been plugged in* and have a low battery, myself, but at those times I didn’t check to see if it would happen if not plugged in. I’m using the bootloader as linked to from the wiki as of about 2 weeks ago, and am running a (custom with NSF support from HCS) build070101. (Jan 1, 2007)

The problem is if the battery is below a certain amount (not sure exactly where, it was around 20% each time according to rockbox, did not check against the standard iPod firmware) and i shut down via holding “Pause/Play” rockbox says “LOW BATTERY, SHUTTING DOWN” or something to that effect. After this, pressing “Menu” to power up doesn’t work- I have to hold select+menu for a few seconds, aka “Reset.”

I’m guessing that rockbox is putting the unit or trying to put the unit into a standby mode when doing the ‘low power’ shut down, and that’s why the standard bootup buttonpress doesn’t work.

I’ve also experienced this on a 5.5g and also on a grayscale 4g

I also often experienced this bug with my ipod nano 1st gen 4GB.
This bug seems like bug  FS#6544  — “battery drains when H10 is off”.

The battery level has decreased when this happens.(isn’t certain)

well is there eny thing i can downlode for my ipod video 30g 5th genation

I’m a new user over here and i got an ipod video 30gb.
im having a very big problem with my ipod because since i installed rockbox and evrything whas done i pulled it out of my docking system to chek it out it has been stuck ever since.
the thing is that it’s rebooting the whole time-over and over and over and over again with a really irritaing click sound coming from the inside.
well if tried to fiz this by putting it back in the docking system to check if i can uninstall rockbox but when i put it in the docking system it just shows *please wait* very low battery and after that it goes on and off again ~.~
so im asking can someone please help me with this problemo?

Dalton R: Rockbox is still quite feasible for use on an ipod video 30g 5G. The problem only happens every now and then, and it is when you want to turn the ipod on. To fix it, you simply hold middle button and menu to “reboot” it (even though it is already off). Simple.

itihatigoroku: I don’t think the battery actually drains with the 30 GB video, it just says it has. After a reboot the battery is still fine.

Andrew: That bug sounds different to this one, and I have not experienced any problems like that myself sorry. So I can’t help. Perhaps try the #rockbox irc channel?

Andrew: You can try holding the rewind button while it reboots to try going into the disk mode, from where you will be able to plug it in as usb, an uninstall rockbox. If this doesn’t work try holding the other buttons while it reboots.

Good luck.

Well thanx for the replys but two dasy ago i somehow got it into to disk mode already :P (didn’t even know it was there!)
and was able to reinstall the apple main software.but still so than for all your concerne :D

this also happened to me, at first i thought that the firmware was fucked up but it was this same problem

Are not there any progress?
In recent build, freezes it while displaying the Apple logo.

And..sometimes, nothing is displayed on the screen, and not possible to reset
it.
Then, it is necessary to leave my ipod for about one week.

Therefore, when I using Rockbox, resets it and shutdown on Apple firmware.
