FS#7172 - Shutdown with remote control and more.

The following minor changes come in handy, when only using the remote while the main unit is hidden in your pocket.

1.
Backlight or Key buttons don’t ever go on when the remote is used

2.
When a key is pressed on the remote, the Gigabeat responds immediately,
Which means ignoring the ‘first keypress’ setting.

3.
Shutdown while holding ‘play’ on the remote.
This requires a new keymap, where remote and main unit functionality are divided.

4.
When shutting down, a low frequency beep will indicate it does so.

Forgot one:
5.
WPS can’t be left with the remote control (Only by shutting down, by holding ‘play’ or pressing a key on the main unit)

I disagree with #1, unless you make it an option:

I use my remote with a gigabeat that’s positioned out of reach, but within peripheral view in my car, large font, and the remote makes it possible to switch songs without taking my eyes off the road. I’d still like it to light up and show me the title though.

I disagree with #4 without it being an option as well.

#5 is also problematic since I like to be able to use the remote when my Gigabeat is docked at home, again in a position out of easy reach. Why is this even necessary, since you the whole point of earlier ones seems to be “You can’t see the WPS anyway?” I’m not sure you should remove the ability to have useful functionality to “protect” users from accidental button presses.

I think #3 could be of general use; I noticed that the keymapping for the remote control and the main unit were the same, so no distinction between the corresponding keypresses. So I’ve changed these to look more like the H10.
Also, it wasn’t possible to turn everything off using the remote: Very irritating.

The other changes are for my own use only.
But some people were also interested (forum), so I submitted the patches.

The whole point of all changes are this:
I’m using the Gigabeat while cycling to my work. I had multiple occasions were my remote control was not functioning, because the WPS was left (due to accidental keypresses, like holding ‘play’ too long).
So I had to:
- stop cycling
- Get the whole MP3 gear out of my jacket.
- Remove the protection from the main unit.
- Push one button on it, to return to the WPS
- Put everything back in place and start cycling again.
Also, the same thing, just to turn it off!! %$#@%$#%@

Strictly my opinion, I somewhat agree with Llorean. Either #3 should be a separate patch, or everything aside from 3 should be set as options. I don’t get #2. If you want the remote to respond immediately wouldn’t you just set the corresponding option already available? I think this is a needed patch with the addition of the suggestions above. Thanks.

The patch tracker is for patches that you want to try to get included in Rockbox. Is this or isn’t this one, since you mention the changes are only intended for your personal use?

a. I agree that #3 should be a separate patch.

b. About #2: I want the remote to respond immediately, but I want the main unit to switch on the backlight first.

c. I made these changes for my own use, but some people on the forum were interested also and asked for a patch.

That’s funny, I noticed that Marcoen Hirschberg has added #3 to svn.

…Also funny, #2 is added by Jonathan Gordon

I’m agree with No. 1, 3 and 4. It will be nice to turn the gigabeat off just pressing and holding the play button on the remote. Also, I think it will save battery time if the backlight doesn’t turn on everytime that I press the volume keys in my remote.
