FS#7815 - Sansa Freezes when hooked up to computer via USB

When I hook my e260 into computer and it is off, it powers up and displays some text and then the screen slowly goes blank.
I get the exact same reaction when I try to use the dual boot feature to boot the sansa firmware.

When I plug in the player when it is already on, it doesn’t freeze, but stays in the Rockbox boot. An image of a USB cable appears, but the computer doesn’t recognize any device.

I’m assuming that the player is having some trouble loading the sansa firmware… but I don’t know if the player is supposed to load the sansa firmware when I plug it into the PC from off.
I know the install pdf says to ensure that my player is on MSC… My player didn’t have MSC, it had MTP… and UMS… but I just googled UMS and it’s supposed to be like MSC!!
Have I just destroyed my MP3 player???
Any help would be appreciated!

One thing I should add.. I just read a little further and I think I was on UMS, because I have been using my MP3 player as a mass storage style device… Although Windows Media player does recognize it still… so I really don't know which one I'm on… I could have sworn the option I had picked was MTP.

Same for me.

I just loaded the firmware a few days ago, and can not get my sansa connected to a computer. I can not boot the factory firmware.
I have tried connecting to win2k and winXP. I was going to try to connect it to a linux box today.
I do not use winXP as my home computer, so I have always had the sansa in mass storage mode.

D'oh! Same here with an e270 and the rockbox build from Sep. 22 - r14817-070922. Originally mounted in linux as mass storage device, patched via instructions, rebooted, Sansa is now a Rockbox player. If I connect to USB while sansa is on, I see USB picture and the battery appears to charge, but I can't view the device under linux or win2k. If I try to boot the original firmware -or- if I plug into USB while the sansa is off, I see the text rockbox bootloader message, and after it calculates a CRC, it appears to crash and the screen "fades" to static.

Is there some other way to force the old firmware to load? Did I just brick this?

thx.

rockbox doesnt have usb on the sansa just yet, so you have to be in the OF (or connect usb while its off).. if its fading to white it usually means it cant load the OF, did you use sansapatcher? or the old method with OF.mi4?

either way, look on the wiki about getting into recovery mode and putting the OF back on, then use sanspatcher to do the install properly

Looks like this is the same issue as: http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=12762.0 where sansapatcher 0.3 has some troubles with newer OF.

I rebooted in recover mode ( set lock key, power up while holding record) and was able to restore an older firmware.

Supposedly 0.2 sansapatcher works, and I see a newer version up this evening, so maybe that works, too.

thx.

I looked at that other page and on the Wiki and I managed to force back the original firmware! Thanks for your help guys… now that I know how to fix this problem, I may try rockbox again. I think my situation may be like that the guy who said his player works but to add songs he has to take rockbox off cause the sansa firmware won't boot right.
Thanks a million :D

The sansapatcher is fine but it is the embedded bootloader file that is causing issues. Commit 14424 for sdhc support is what broke the bootloader. Reversing that commit makes it work again. I opened a bug  FS#7806 .

To fix it you will need to recover to a non rockboxed sansa firmware and use the sansapatcher with version 0.2. It is posted in the forum thread http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=12762.msg97175#msg97175

I looked on the other page and there was something about a reverse bootloader.
I didn't try it but instead I tried what some other people were saying.
Instead of sansapatcher.exe 0.3, I used 0.2 and it's working fine.
I can now boot Rockbox normally and with the dual boot function the Sansa firmware starts up :D
Also, the USB docking now works. When I plug in the player from off it boots up and goes through the rock box bootloader screen and then shifts to sansa. Everything is great so far!!
On the top of the screen however, it now appears that the first line of pixels don't function. However, this is trivial to me as I have now fixed my MP3 player. :D

Maybe not exactly the same, but when I connect USB to a powered-on Sansa c250 running RB, it freezes and the only solution is to disconnect the battery for 2-3 seconds (recovery mode doesn't work).
When booting OF and then plugging in USB, everything works as expected.

If you plug in the player when off, does it boot up into OF and work?
To be honest I can't remember what happens when I dock it w/ RB running.
Initially when I had the dual-boot problem, docking w/ RB would still work. It would show a USB icon and it wouldn't do anything, except charge I assume. With my fixed e260, I think the same happens, but I'd have to check to be sure.
You're not running the reverse boot-loader are you?

It freezes even when it's off and then USB is connected.
I'm running the official bootloader (whatever sansapatcher installs).

Sorry for misleading you in the previous comment, but I've checked again and if USB is plugged in when the player is off, OF boots and UMS mode is established as usual.

No prob. This is an interesting problem. To be honest I don't really know how to help you because my issue was a little different.
When I boot RB and plug in the USB cable all I get is an image of the cable because they haven't written programming for RB docking yet, but I don't get a freeze.
It doesn't seem that your MP3 player has the problem I had but something different. I can only suggest maybe trying to uninstall RB and then reinstall it. If that doesn't work the other forums probably know more about it than I do.
sorry!
