FS#8446 - Hindi Translation

I have translated rockbox to Hindi (for more on Hindi and what the language is, visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hindi). It should be translated so that most regional Hindi speakers can read and understand the strings without difficulty. Currently, unifont should support Devanagari script, so Hindi should work.

.lang file is attached and tell me about anything that’s wrong with it.

Committed in svn r16106. Thanks

Deleted the stuff about this translation being the english file. And you need to add the <voice> *: "" </voice> parts. aThey should be filled out with hindi not english.

Very nice Apoo, I'll look at it this week-end, and let you know if there is something to fix.

Seriously, my name isn't Apoo, I just shortened it that way. And I just made this translation so that Indian people who use rockbox (and there are lots of them) can read it in their native language (although most of us know English and are actually more proficient in it).

I used "simple" Hindi for this translation instead of using big words that are from Sanskrit originally. This way most Urdu and Marathi speakers should be able to understand it, too.

Mustapha, you seem to be a Hindi speaker and I definitely need help with some of the spelling because although I can speak Hindi well, I can't read or write that well (let's say 2nd grade level)

Cheers

Sorry to mention to harry that there is no Hindi TTS that I know of and the voice tags would pretty much be useless. Tell me if you do manage to find a good Hindi TTS.

espeak-hi is hindi. And I think mustafa is french not hindi. In fact, he does the french translation.

I think it should be fine to commit this translation without the voice strings. They can always be fixed later, and the text-interface is after all the more important part.

It'll still be wanted to have the voice strings put down right as well, but I don't see a problem in having languages without translated voicestrings - it sure beats having no translation.

Sorry, I thought Mustapha Senhaji was an Indian name. I'll be doing the voice tags soon and going over the whole translation in general. Once more people notice this translation, more "refining" work can be done on it as there are many different dialects of Hindi and it's hard to find a "one-size-fits-all" translation. I'll be doing the best I can, though.

If you feel that way. I know moos won't commit anything without voice strings.

Well, in that case, I'm now working on the voice strings :D

Nice, no rush, tell me when you will be fine with voice strings too then, and I'll commit it. (My name is from Morocco ;)

Firsly, we'll need your real name before committing.

Secondly, I really don't see any reason why we can't commit it before the voice strings are fixed. It could take a while, and there's not really any harm done in having the current version committed until then. Do you violently disagree, Moos?

@rasher: No problem here, I'm fine with this, the most we have the merier.

@ApooMaha:Like rasher said you, I've just need your full real name for the Rockbox credits file and I'll commit this.
Once it will be in svn, you or any hindi user will can update the new strings added and update the voice entries.

Moos: I've emailed you my full name, but can you refer to me as "Apoo Maha" when it is committed and shows up as the description of the commit? Otherwise, put my full name (emailed to you) in the credits.

I'll commit this when I back home this night. I received your mail with your full name, I will use it for the credis file.

Great work Apoo Maha!!

Shouldn't "ON" string be translated as "चालू करो"

lixer commented on 2008-01-17 06:45

I haven't used Hindi since my High school days so it bit rusty…. Thats about 20 years :)

I think "बंद" is more suitable word for "OFF".

Turn off the Light - लाइट बंद करो

Well, I used a Hindi dictionary for most of this, but I see where you're going with the "बढ़ा" versus "बंद" thing. Another thing to note is that I can only speak Hindi well and therefore I know the vocabulary, but I'm not the most fluent in writing and reading, but I'm good enough.

Pav: You're welcome to help me out with this translation and especially the voice strings because I don't have any time this week, the earliest I can finish this up is by the beginning of February.

I will fix up all of these issues and this translation is bound to get more attention once it's committed and that will lead to more refinement of the translation.

I'm currently working on getting this translation finished…

I just finished adding voice tags and going over the whole translation (editing/adding/deleting). Attached is the final version ready to go!

Then there's just the matter of your full name.
