Presently the manual (section 3.3) for the iPod Mini, iPod 4g, iPod Color, iPod Nano 1g/2g, and iPod Video state the following:

"The player can be charged over USB without connecting to your computer by holding Menu while plugging in. This allows you to continue using the player normally."

What wasn't clear to me was that rockbox has to already be booted up and running before you do this. It frustrated me for a while until I found this hint in the forums.

Could the manuals be updated to reflect this? Perhaps the following text instead:

"The player can be charged over USB without connecting to your computer by holding Menu while plugging in. This allows you to continue using the player normally. The player must be fully booted up and running."

Not sure that I understand the issue. If the player is not booted up and running, what happens that you did not expect to happen? It didn't boot, or it didn't charge, or something else?
I think I disagree with "the player must be fully booted up and running" addition, on the basis of the previous sentence saying that "this allows you to continue using the player normally." (not sure how you could "continue using" a device that is turned off and isn't running).

I wasn't trying to say there's an issue with the software/firmware/hardware. I was asking for a documentation change.

I found several places in the forums which confirmed that the player can be charged over USB without connecting to your computer and going into disk mode. The forums went into more detail than the user manual, stating that you should power up the music player first, *then* hold the menu button while plugging it into the USB cable.

I feel that the verbage currently in the manual could be made more clear. For a long time, I tried the following steps:

- unit is off
- plug unit into USB cable connected to computer
- hold down menu button while booting

Those steps don't result in the expected "charge over USB while listening to music" feature. Eventually, this frustrated me enough to go searching the forums, where I found the proper procedure should be:

- unit is on/booted, but could use a charge
- hold down menu button
- plug unit into USB cable connected to computer

*These* steps did result in the desired effect. Rockbox happily remained running, doing whatever it was doing before (playing music, playing a game, or whatever else you had happened to have it doing). It also started charging at the same time.
