Hi Rockbox crew.

I live in New Zealand and own a jukebox FM recorder. I
was disappointed with the original
Archos OS but soon discovered your site and now run
Rockbox v2.1 which is MUCH better. Thanks-
makes it useable. I also transplanted a 60GB hard drive
into it... hmmm 500+ full length albums
at 192kb/s with room for more! Cant wait till 100GB
drives become cheaply available.

Hardware info:
rom 1.23
mask 0x0304
usb positive
ata 0x200 master
pr positive
flash m=bf d=d6
rom crc 0x222f v1

A few thoughts on a better recording user interface for
it though...

When recording, there is no source (mic, line in etc) info
displayed. I have many times
had the line in connected to a stereo but been actually
recording through the inbuilt mic.
How about dispensing with the individual Left/ Right
recording levels but keep the main
gain level adjustment, thereby freeing up the display of
this hardly ever used feature.
Display instead: frequency, channel (stereo/ mono),
quality, and source in such a way that
keying the F1, F2, F3 and UP buttons directly cycle
through the options. eg repeatedly
pressing F1 in the recording screen cycles the frequency
through 44.1 48 32 22.05 24 16 khz.
The UP key would change the source.

Since the mic is of such low quality and the line in is of
higher quality, Set user changeable
default recording modes which refect this (eg pressing
the UP key to set the source to line in
would also automatically set freq to 44.1, channel to
stereo, and quality to 5). These could
then be changed with F1, F2 and F3 if desired but
pressing UP (new source) would automatically
set them to the defaults.
This would save much time as recording modes dont
have to be manually changed if the source is
changed.

Also a remaining recording time (or disk space) could be
displayed.

While in the file browser mode, get rid of the F2 and F3
menu options (they can be changed
through the master F1 menu) but keep their format style
for all F1 option changes (so for
example: going into F1 general display settings brings up
a multi menu similar to the one
currently brought up by pressing F3)

While in file browser mode- Use F3 to directly activate
recording (instead of
activating recording through the current F1 menu) and
F2 to directly activate the radio.
If recording from the radio (pressing F3 after F2), switch
the display to recording mode
(as above with F1, F2, F3 changing the rec options BUT
the UP key not changing the source) and
begin radio recording when the play button is pressed
(like recording from any other source).

While in file browser and F1 setting modes, Display at
the bottom of the screen what the F1,
F2, F3 keys do (with maybe a further option of
deactivating this information)

Perhaps you are on to these ideas already- I look
forward to downloading rockbox v3.0

Why did you file a feature request as a bug report?

Although you have some nice ideas, I think the rest of the
Rockbox community would disagree about your ideas of
remapping the F-keys like that.

The recording screen facelift discussion is here: http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=15911.0, if you still care, or if anyone stumbles across this with similar requests.
