FS#4773 - rockbox 5g ipod recording?

Hi, I’m new to Rockbox and all this hacking my ipod stuff, however all this talk of the ipod being able to record high quality audio got my interest. Installed rockbox, works great, but still no recording. Any plans to include this feature in new versions of the software? Can’t wait untill ipod linux for the 5gs comes out. Thanks!

Closing all feature requests.

Whilst the iPod 5G may technically be capable of recording, unfortunatly the iPod has no microphone, digital or line inputs. I do remember a microphone/line in recording attachment that plugged into the Dock connector, but this was for the earlier iPods and I am not sure if there will be a version for the iPod 5G. However Apple are bringing out a FM Radio Remote controller which enables FM receiving, so it may be possible to record from that.

you dont need a line in or microphone, just reverse engineer it to record through the headphones.
i never have a mic that works, so i just plug in my headphones and use the left channel as a mic.
and sometimes it sounds better than a mic ever could.

i would really like to have this feature on my ipod 5g.
too bad i can’t code or anything ;

iPodLinux supports recording through the headphone jack, http://ipodlinux.org/Recording, so it *is* possible.

no really, i might be that it will never be possible on the 5g

they wrote in the wiki: “Recording on the Nano and the Fifth Generation iPods is also not currently supported.”

maybe apple had disabled this function…or some hardware limitations.

greets fabifri (my english isn’t very well..but…)

actually it is possible, apples site says so, but how, i don’t know….

I am happy to inform you that there has been a successful attempt recording on the ipod video. one of our developers has succeeded in recording an 16-bit/44.1KHz stereo WAV file. He is currently working on the code. to use the upcoming feature you will have to make yourself a line-in to dock connector cable. (see http://ipodlinux.org/Dock_connector for reference)
there is no internal amplifier on the line-in jack for the ipod, so to record from an external microphone one would have to use an external amplifier. (imho, this is actually good news as well: most internal amps aren’t good enough to make good recordings).

That is really awesome news. But if you could take and find a way to attach the “source” cables to the dock connector, would that be possible first of all, and secondly, will that work?

I’m not sure what you’ve ment… but,

The idea would be wiring a line-in jack to the line-in pins on the dock connector. I don’t know if it’s possible to phsyically hack the original dock connector, But you manage to do that, it will work.

That’s what i meant, but not by hacking, but by manually attaching the cables each time.
