FS#4930 - scummvm for rockbox

Hi folks. I just found this replacement FW and I really think that scummvm ( http://www.scummvm.org/ ) port/integration would be a great and really appreciate addition ;) Just imagine playing the old (but still good) lucas arts games like Monkey Island or Indiana Jones on iPod Video with its huge screen! That would be simply superb.

Thank you for all your hard work!

Closing all feature requests.

My understanding of SCUMMVM games is that they require either mouse or full keyboard input, neither of which rockbox supports.
While it is true that a virtual keyboard could be used, it would be taking up precious screen real estate which would be limited to start off with.

Do you know what resolution SCUMMVM games run at? It would be a good place to start, to determine the plausibility of the port.
For reference the iPod video’s resolution is 320×240 (from memory, correct me if I’m wrong).

Although I must say the idea of this port is pretty interesting, I hope that technical limitations won’t prevent it from happening.

Of course, the mouse is required in this type of games. But maybe it could be emulated via iPod wheel? For example, there is also scummvm port for mobile phones (based on symbian 60 or WinCE). And the games are perfectly playable even with phone joystick! OK, not as playable because of small phone screen ;) But “mouse” move using phone joystick or mapped keys is OK.

As for resolution, as far as I remember, the original scumm based games are running at 320×240 so the iPod Video screen is ready for them. Here is an old discussion at scummvm forum regarding the port of scummvm to rockbox (for iriver players)…

The question is what are the iPod HW specs and if they are good enough for running scummvm? But if the iPod Video can play video, or run GBA emulator, I’m sure that scummvm shouldn’t be a problem ;)

ScummVM is pretty heavily floating point and object oriented code.

That being said, for SCUMM games you need a two axis input, and two mouse buttons. This should be doable with most Rockbox targets.
As well, it’s not an emulator but rather an interpreter, so many of the games will run on most targets just fine. Except for the last Monkey Island game in 2D, all SCUMM games were 320×240 I believe. And of course, this can be halved without too much pain other than the text for the input portion of the screen.

ipod Linux has already ported this so triple boot with iPod Linux and there you go.

cool. it still would be a great addition for other targets, though.
