FS#5656 - FM tuner vs.player level

I have noticed that the tuner max volume is lower than max player volume. I think it have been chosen because radio stations dynamics are very low, then RMS level is higher than the played music. However, listening to classical music radio stations level could be too low. Could be added a feature to set level difference i.e. between 0 and -10dB?

Closing all feature requests.

the radio is controlled by hardware, and only routed to the output. So there is nothing that can be done about this – if your radio station is pretty low, then it is low. There hasn't anything be "chosen".

I don't understand your request completely. Do you want to autmoatically increase the volume when entering the radio screen? This IMO isn't a good idea, as it may damage your ears when you have tuned a "loud" radio station upon enabling the radio. Or what exactly is your idea?

Ehum, the audio from the FM chip is routed via the audio input of the audio codec, and the gain is controlled in the same way as the recording gain. It is perfectly possible to adjust the FM radio gain. In fact, this is exactly what we were discussing in the IRC channel a few days ago.

It is? Ok, but in that case I'm surprised why  FS#5603  got rejected being a hardware issue. Unfortunately I rarely have time to follow IRC ATM.
(Oh, I should have thought of that myself – as we can record from the radio there _should_ be a way to adjust its level. I need to go on vacation… if only someone would donate the time for it ;-)

I have posted this question because with the "old" iRiver firmware tuner level was higher, it was the same of the player level…

I was supposing that radio level have been lowered intentionally of several dBs…

see also  FS#5922  for a detailed description of the current behaviour.

The main purpose of all players is to play at best possible quality.
Therefore, all sound related problems should not be tagged 'severity low',
especially if the original firmware demonstrates that it is possible
to get much better FM sound and receiving.
The FM receiver is a key feature of the iriver. Rockbox can dim the display
light at different speeds, but not play FM decently… this is the only
reason why I still have to switch firmwares. Please set it at least
to severity normal.

Although FM radio gain is a valid feature request (and will probably get done), it is not a bug ergo doesn't deserve a severity rating at all.

(I must say that X5 has a different DAC/ADC than iriver's, so I might be wrong here. X5 sets recording gain to 0 dB when entering FM mode)
