This is something that I was going to request. All the album art for my music library has been embedded in the mp3 files, and since I really don't want to take the time to change this, the only way I'll be able to display album art on my iPod 5G via Rockbox would be to:

1) Have Rockbox extract it from the file, or
2) Have Rockbox utilize the image files created for the native apple firmware.

I'll also need:

3) Have Rockbox scale the image files (which are primarily 300x300 in my case) to the necessary size for display.

I think that #3 is already covered in a patch, but this does me no good without either #1 or #2. It seems like the best solution would be to have the art extracted from the embedded jpg, since the same method could be used by players other than the iPod.

The problem with your #1 are two things:
a) the corresponding ID-Tag description says that it could contain pictures in several formats.
One of the possible formats is JPEG, but it's not the only one.
Shall we only support JPEG? Or also PNG, GIF, ...?
I agree that the most commonly used format is JPEG - so we could focus on that.
But for that...
b) it is necessary to integrate the JPEG code which is currently available as
plugin in the main code.
This is currently not done because the core devs don't want to "waste" memory for that.
So I don't know if it ever will be done...

I don't know about #2. Can you give more information about what's needed for that?

Actually I agree to your suggestions, but I don't know if the core devs would accept it.
They didn't even accept the existing resize patch up to now :-(

I agree with Larry. I am a newbie to Rockbox, but it seems to me that this shouldn't be as difficult a feature as I have been reading. I am shocked that this feature wasn't apart of the latest build of rockbox to be honest.

As for only supporting JPEG, why not? BMP and 100 X 100 was the only format acceptable for album art in the past. Got to start small. I'm not sure about the extraction of image files from native apple format, but from formats that use ID3 tags, why not?

I hope this get resolved soon... Because this is my only real hangup about Rockbox. I like everything else!

In my opinion the ablity to scale the cover down is not so important, as it can easily been done one the PC.
It also would cost a lot of prozessor time, so better leave this out.

The important thing would be the extraction out of ID3 Tags.

I would consider this as my most important Feature, as ID3 Picture Tags are a thing I have on Songbird an AmaroK and would like to see it on the Rockbox, too.
