FS#5967 - nimbus-18 font

First shot at nimbus-18 (my favourite shape). All basic glyphs have been designed, so the rest should be trivial. Markun, are you reading this? ;-)

Thanks, committed to SVN just no!

Yes :)

Looks really nice in the gigabeat simulator. I’ll let you know if I add some more glyphs.

Corrected some glyphs (made them thicker), added some accented and cyrillic glyphs, changed font size to 19 to make accented capitals possible at the normal size and in order to improve readability

Made simple single and double qoute really simple (i.e. not typographic)

Some more corrections:

  1. made little cyrillic i look like latin u
  2. adjusted little cyrillic f to have the same height as latin o
  3. made little cyrillic l and d look like latin v

These changes should also be applied to nimbus-12 and nimbus-14.

Corrected r, cyrillic capital L and D. Added flipped ! and ?.

Markun, I’m now not so sure about the design. For example ‘A’: the ‘legs’ have width of 3 but the gap has the width of 2. In the original font these widths are the same. Isn’t it a design flaw?

I added this font to my fontstats page: http://rasher.dk/rockbox/fontstats/

The linked charts there might be helpful in further expanding the font.

This http://fonts.goldenweb.it/pan_file/l/en/font2/Chicago.ttf/d2/True_Type_Fonts/c/c/default.html Chicago truetype font uses the same with for the gap and the stroke (at least for the A). Enter a single “A” in the form to get a large-sized A.

You are right about the A, but don’t know if it will look good if you make it any wider.
You can get some inspiration here maybe:

http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/apple/chicago/

although I think they made it a bit too ‘round’ compared to the original BDF font.
btw, I noticed that the Chicago font is used in the 1995 movie Hackers ;)

Well, they’ve probably made it right. But they use anti alising which is not available for bitmap fonts. I tried to keep the original width/height ratio which for Chicago is 2:3. And A has dimensions of 8:12 = 2:3. So I think I won’t edit the font anymore. Even if it’s not the best possible design, I quite like it on my IHP-120.

Hi,

some time ago I made up a WPS for my taste. It’s clean and simple and contains only the bare minimum about the current song. No technical details like file format or bit rate. Actually it’s so simple that it works well also with nimbus-19. So I thought I’d share it. But I don’t have a wiki account, so I place it here. On H120, the WPS works well with any font up to and including 14 points (I used nimbus-14 before) and 18 or more points. 15, 16, and 17 points are not so good since the half of the last line is cut off.

Here it is (the first line is ‘%we’, the lst line ends with ‘Fn>’):

%we

%ac%s%?ia<%ia|%d2>
%ac%s%?it<%it|%fn>

%al%pc%ac%pp/%pe%ar-%pr
%pb

%ac%s%t4%?It<%It|%Fn>
