FS#6043 - X5+RockBox+Remote=CLICKS

I found new conditions where the bug can be seen (heard) and now I understand, why nobody heard it before: a few use remote.

So, X5+RockBox+Remote+FLAC=clicks on regular basis, heard at -40 volume.
Without the remote or with OF there is no clicks. See http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=6397.0

There is a post by Mike Sevakis: “Play a nice quiet Back organ piece and you’ll hear this in spades. Yes, tvg, it almost sounds like click, pops and scratches on a phonograph record. It is patterned and carries through everything.” So the bug is confirmed, is there any chance to have it corrected?
Thank you!

see  FS#6815  for a patch.

Theese are different things. For the radio, this is some kind of keypress distortion.
For the subject, it happens spontaneously.

Wrong: ticking happens without user interaction in radio as well.

Not exactly. In radio regular (!) ticking is only at certain frequencies, others do not have ticking. This points that it is connected with interference, isn’t it?
The OF on X5 is also terribly clicks when interacting player with radio, so it has nothing to do with it to improve quality, because it is bad from the beginning.

Clicks while playin have very irregular basis. And, as I found, they are in some way related to remote scrolling options.

I guess that ticking is a result signals on the remote wire inducing the headphone wire.
This means that ticks occur when communication with the remote happens (mostly LCD updates and ADC button readings).

Maybe the radio screen updates the screen regularly, whereas remote scrolling causes irregular updates.

Idea: check whether ticks occur on the line-out output as well while the remote is connected.

Hm… I tried to check according to your advice… But first I would like to find the clicks exactly again, to compare.

And on the lates build I couldn’t find it. Very strange, I’ll try to step back…

Ok, here is the situation.
I didn’t find any clicks and I wanted to rollback and copied an old rockbox1.iaudio and loaded it. This ruined all my settings and reset to default theme. The clicks were back again with old build and with new build too.

Then I set remote scrolling options to: Scrolling pixels: 1 pixel and scrolling speed: 0. Though it still scrolls the remote text by 1 pixel left-right, the clicks are gone!!! So it can be said for sure, that clicks are caused by remote update.

One more thing: the clicks, while present, do NOT appear at the line-out. In the same time they are on the remote and they absent in the line-out. So it can be said, that the clicks are generated by the remote.

Conclusion (hypothetical):

1) The clicks disappear when setting scroll options to “no scroll” on the remote, so they are generated by scrolling.
2) The clicks are generated by the remote itself with rockbox.

Of course there may be some caveats, but this is just a direction to think…

Check out  FS#6815  and see what happens. It’s not in a finished state but will likely help.
