DetailsCurrently, Rockbox's optical out functions purely as a true line out -- that is, it bypasses all digital signal processing under Sound Settings, such as volume, treble, bass, EQ, etc.
While a true optical line out is *usually* best, *certain* circumstances require the DSP option (such as listening to a harsh recording with a bright DAC and overly bright headphones). Would it be possible to create a DSP enable/disable option under General Settings/Playback/Optical Output? Also: For those who are not adept at EQ, decremental settings for treble and bass (0 to -24 for bass, 0 to -6 for treble) might create a nice alternative. Thanks for listening. |
This task depends upon
The EQ is handled in software, and it should affect the digital output as well.
I would disable it, because I use the bass, treble, and EQ settings for listening with earphone and I use optical out to connect to my home sound system, where I have an external EQ adjusted to my room etc.
Also, for the original poster: The treble/bass controls are hardware, we can't control the range in which they operate, thus there are only positive gains, none negative.
Hmm, the more I think of it, the more I feel the problem is of more fundamental nature. The thing is that it is not obvious to a user that there are two effects sections, one of which sits in front of both analog and digital output (and therefore cannot be applied individually), and one of which sits in front of the digital output.
I would therefore like to suggest to add a graphical user interface to the sound/effect routing. I know such a thing from my T.C. Electronics Finalizer, which has one screen that shows a kind of block diagram of the system (picture enclosed). This gives the user an immediate idea about the system structure (what is possible, what not) and simplifies navigation. In the Finalizer, the user can naviate between the boxes (in the picture, Input box is currently selected) and change their setting with another knob.
