FS#7417 - Quick Menu for Rockbox.

Seeing that the Rockbox is highly configurable and has a lot of options (and is expanding) i think that a “Quick Menu” would be very practical. Now in order to reach to the LCD Upside Down mode settings you need to go to 5 sub items.

The “Quick Menu” would be on the top level of the Menu/Navigation. And it will include the items that the user chooses to have (those can be configured via the Rockbox settings or in a .cfg file).

A sketch would be like this:
Quick Menu

  • LCD Settings
  • Playback Settings
  • Database
  • etc….

The user should be able to configure the menu items, move them up or down, delete them or insert new ones. and there should be a limit of maybe 10-15 items (?)

Closing all feature requests.

IMHO it’s a good idea, some options i always use are very nested in submenus.
Instead of create a new menu, maybe you can append more voices in the main menu like this:

File
Database
(…)
System

Quick menu #1
Quick menu #2

What i meant was the need for an menu item in the Main Menu, called (e.g.)”Quick Menu” and after you select that you have access to the most used menu items you have added.

And i think that more than one menu isn’t really useful. There’s enough of menu items as for now.

It was only an advice, it depends by what you like more and how many items you want to add.
If I want only 3/4 items, i can add them to the main menu, but for 10/15 entries a Quickmenu item is better.

this patch sort of does what you want..

well, it looks like im the only dev who likes the idea.. so if you want it in the core you need to get more dev support…

Thanks a lot jdgordon. The users at the ABI forums find the quick menu very useful.

Hmm, how do i get more dev support? E-mail them?

Also, there were two suggestions on the ABI forums:
1. Use the Rec Button for accessing the Quick Menu
2. An option or a shortcut in the Sansa player to be able to add an item to the Quick Menu from there. (add to quickmenu) .

well, really there is no way to get dev support unless your lucky and they really like the idea.. unfortunatly they are all pretty much against it (reads the logs from the tuesday, its me and one other against the whole room).

so that said, im probably going to fiddle a bit more to make it more how I want it.
1) im going to replace the quickscreen with this, because i find the QS useless
2) na, edit the file on the computer, its no big deal

Geez, just read the logs… :(
I think there was some misunderstanding in what this feature(and the patch you added) really does.

But again, this is usable and a lot of people like it. But even as a patch i’m happy with it :)

Perhaps it would be better to access the ‘quick’ menu using a key combination, kind of like how the context menu works?

This could be activated with the combination of two keys if there aren’t enough single keys.

For example, on the iPod, a good key combination would be to hold the middle key and the play/pause key at the same time to bring up the quick menu. That won’t conflict with any other current key combinations and won’t modify any existing menus, so the devs can be happy about that!
Note that on the iPod, the middle key and menu key combination is already used as a method to exit programs.

I think that would be much easier :)

Maybe we can also encourage the devs with votes?

I think that this would be a very useful feature

Why dont you create config files for all you custom requirements, I have 5 different config files in root, LCD upside down, LCD normal, spdif on, spdif off, etc…much easier than having yet “another” context menu, of which most are undiscovered, even the devs are discovering new menus, like the context menus for some items in root and elsewhere.

that is the argument which has blocked me commiting this… The reason i dont like that argument is because thats fine when you only change a few settings to a few values,

I would just add up the majority of mobile phones, pda’s and other gadgets we use everyday, because of the large number of option always have this kind of menu (which is named Quick Menu, Shortcut, Custom Menu etc.) where they can access the items they use more frequently.

That is the sole reason why I requested this feature.

Of course we can have custom .cfg files. But this is something different from that solution.
