FS#8933 - Sansa e280 stuck after swtich the playlist

I got an Sandsik e280 (refurbished buy.com) recently and installed rockbox (r17087 080412) into it. It works great most of the time and thanks for you guys great work.

Here is a problem:
I have a few big directories. The tree structure is /music/x/y, /music/x/z, where y, z has 300-400 mp3 files in each. Each of mp3 file is about 5-minute mp3 in 128kb/s or 64kb/s of a few audiobooks. They are not been tagged well, so each of them are belong to their own album with a common artist though. The problem is that when I navigate in with “file” function and play from the middle, say the 200th file, it gets into the play screen and the screen shows “play”, but it does not play actually, no sound, the progress bar does not move either. It does play if I start from the first though. I wait a few minutes and it does not start. I can consistently produce this problem.

One exception is that I can create a playlist from the middle, then play the playlist. Sometimes it works. But it refuses to play if I fast forward a few clips right after the play.

I guess it is some problem with the cache. So I enabled the directory cache in the setting. (The player has a few hundred Mb left and the status show it uses about 20M for cache.) And it shows “file buffer full” at first. I have to increase the default file number from 500 to 1, 000 to get around. (I do not have more than 400 files in one directory at first, why 500 not work?) After this, the problem disappear most of the time. But occasionally it happens. I cannot consistently reproduce it. I can mostly play from the bookmark created from the last playback. But occasionally there is problem too.

After a few more days playing, I met the playback stuck from time to time and I am not sure it is the same nature like before but I get more idea about this one. When it is playing from a long playlist, I go to the “file”, play another mp3 file or another playlist. Sometimes it stuck right there, switched into the file in the playback screen but not play. Sometimes it starts to play, then I try to skip a few tracks by clicking the fast forwarding a few times, and it stucks right there. In either case, I can get around by stopping the playback via the power key. Then click the “resume playback” in the root. It seems the system did not release the resource when switch the playlist. Hopefully this information is relevant. Thanks.

This does indeed sound like a bug. However, you might want to set the buffer limit even higher if your filenames are long. See here: http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/GeneralFAQ#What_does_dir_buffer_is_full_mea

Several buffering and playback issues have been fixed recently, could you please see if the latest build improves matters, then report back here.

I have used r180007-080710 for a few days. I have met similar problems maybe a couple of times. But it is certainly much better than before (about a few times every day). Occasionally the switch directory is slow, but it comes up in the end. Thanks for your superb job.

Does this still happen?
