This page contains links to collections of free images. The phrase "free images" refers either to images in the public domain or to copyrighted images published with a clear license that grants freedom to reuse and/or modify.

Flickr	Collection of images released under various CC licenses
openphoto	Another collection of CC licensed images. Choose an appropriate license.
NASA	NASA's image archives contain many public domain images. Read the terms here.
NOAA photo library	NOAA photos are also in the public domain. See statement here.
FWS Digital Library System	The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service also has a large collection of public domain images. See terms here.
gimp-savvy.com	This is a collection of 27,000 images from NASA, NOAA and FWS. (*)
PD Photo	Thousands of public domain images sorted into categories.
BurningWell	Another repository of public domain images; searchable.
PUBLIC-DOMAIN-PHOTOS	Another collection of 5,000+ public domain images; categorized and searchable.

(*): I don't know if this is more convenient than the original archives or not.
