08:37:28dwihnoI have a multipart question
08:37:47dwihnoa) if a hard disk makes a "clunking" sound, what's wrong? the heads banging against the wall?
08:38:05dwihnob) is it possible to fix the above and retreive the data?
08:38:18Zagora) some disks clunk as part of normal operation
08:38:53Zagoruh, you need to describe the error more
08:42:55dwihnoWell, the HD controller reports a disk, but gives no access whatsoever

08:44:51dwihnoEvery time a read is attempted, the disk clunks lots of times.
08:45:00Zagordisassemble it and put it in the computer on a proper ide connection and see what you can get out of it

13:24:36Zagorare you telling me your entire linux box hangs when you type "mount /mnt/archos" ?
13:25:22Quelsaruk.... are you gonna kill me if i say so?
13:25:23HesMy SMP linux boxes hang almost always when I plug in the archos.
13:25:48ZagorHes: the entire box? not just the mount?
13:25:58HesEntire box, hard hang.
13:26:06Zagorwowsers
13:26:14HesI think it's SMP related.
13:26:23Zagorcould be
13:26:30ZagorQuelsaruk: which kernel are you using?
13:26:53Quelsaruklet me remeber...
13:26:55HesIt's better if I do the plugin on an idle box which has just been rebooted.
13:27:10Quelsarukcould it be something like 2.4.20.9 ??
13:27:11Heswith no other USB using modules loaded (USB audio or something)
13:27:13ZagorQuelsaruk: run "uname -a" to find out
13:27:52Hesand I've had this since last summer... tried up to 2.4.19-rc1.
13:28:32Quelsarukzagor... i'm now on win2k because *don't ask me why* nowadays it's more stable than my linux system. :((
13:28:58Zagorsounds bad
13:28:59Quelsarukyesterday my whole box hanged twice. And i was doing nothing.
13:29:19HesBad hardware possibly, bad connection or overheating somewhere?
13:29:28Quelsarukoverheating
13:29:50Quelsaruk:)
13:30:17Quelsaruki must buy a gasoline can and show this computer what's *real* fire.....
13:30:55HesMy home box started doing hard hangs before christmas... it was only slightly overclocked (450 to 500 MHz P2 dual CPU) but dropping back to 450 fixed it. It had been working just fine, overclocked, for a couple years.
13:31:20Quelsaruki don't have my computer overclocked...
13:31:55HesThen I upgraded the video card to a slightly newer (but not brand new & hot & cool) 3D card and it started hanging again, it was actually caused by the video card overheating because it was installed next to the TV card
13:33:14Hesso that there was little space next to the GPU&fan... I replaced the PCI cards so that quarter&half-height ethernet & USB2 cards were next to the video card, now it works nicely again (better air flow).
13:33:18Quelsarukanyway... has anyone an idea of why the pc hangs when i mount the jukebox?
13:33:21Hes&%$#@ PC hardware 8-)
13:36:11ZagorHes: I replaced my gpu fan with a monster 400g heatsink. i love the silence.
13:36:29ZagorQuelsaruk: sorry, no idea.
13:36:51HesMy fan isn't very noisy, I have too many fast disks & the dual CPUs already, so I don't hear it under them
13:37:18HesI would love silence, I hate the noise when mastering choir recordings
13:37:31Zagorok. i only have a (very quiet) cpu fan left now, so the pc is nearly silent. very nice.
13:38:21Hesmy laptop is getting pretty noisy too, the IBM disk makes a bad noise
13:38:30QuelsarukZagor: i have two cpu fans quite noisy, but i turn on speakers, play some heavy metal, and no prob. :)
13:38:39Zagorhaha
13:38:45Hesthat is one alternative approach 8-)
13:41:18Quelsarukmy overheating problem is that... dual processor computer with not too good refrigeration. :( In winter it's ok, i only have to open the window, but on summer... nowadays we are about 30ºC and the computer start hanging... i fear *real* summer :(
13:41:33HesI have too much stuff in the box, disks & cards, hard to fit in good heat sinks, and the disks produce loads of heat. Got a couple 10Krpm disks striped (good for audio processing performance, cut & pastes of large tracks make them scream)
13:42:22ZagorQuelsaruk: do you have a dual processor machine too?
13:42:28Quelsarukyups
13:42:35HesDid the linux mounting ever work for you?
13:42:37Heswithout hangs?
13:42:39Zagorok.
13:43:04Quelsarukit worked fine, until yesterday :)
13:43:19QuelsarukZagor: who has another dual processor machine?
13:43:25*Hes .
13:43:34HesSo what changed yesterday?
13:43:50Quelsarukhes... that's what i want to find out :)
13:44:16Quelsarukmaybe chaos gods are playing with me..
13:44:19Quelsarukdunno
13:44:32HesNo kernel upgrade? new modules / hardware which would cause new modules to be loaded?

16:38:38RaddNope, not there. Tried 0503-0506. Bleeding edge has it, not daily builds. Stevie[FP]->It was me, Norrin was taken when I signed on today.
16:38:38Stevie[FP]that didn't stop him from having the problem
16:38:39Stevie[FP];)
16:38:47Stevie[FP]oh
16:38:51RaddIt was yesterday and I was chatting with you.
16:39:13Quelsarukummm
16:39:53Quelsarukhttp://rockbox.haxx.se/daily/changes-20030504.html
16:40:21Quelsarukthis daily build has FM
16:40:52RaddYep, read all about the changes but the FM Radio option isn't there. At least not the daily build file itself even though the description says it does.
16:41:30RaddYou would also think if 0504 had it, 0506 would but not there either.
16:41:43RaddI'll download bleeding edge until daily builds are updated.
16:42:34Quelsarukhow strange..
16:42:42Stevie[FP]I no longer remember who I've asked this

17:33:55Stevie[FP]what's up?
17:35:26webminduhm
17:35:41webmindsugar bread, plp, and i really want a certain feat in rockbox
17:35:56Stevie[FP]do tell
17:36:28webmindmultiple hd support + copy/move function
17:37:04Stevie[FP]copy/move I can see
17:37:08Stevie[FP]but multiple HD?
17:37:23Stevie[FP]I don't think that's possible with the hardware we have
17:37:36Stevie[FP]why would you need more than 20gb anyway?
17:38:06webmindwhy not.. a plain ata bus should be capable of 2 hd's right ?
17:38:53webmindit's not that i want more.. already ordered a 40gb disk for it.. and i can switch with my current.. it's more that i ant to be able to empty my CF cards on my jukebox
17:38:53HesIt should be possible, would just require an adapter cable for the second disk...
17:39:02webmindHes, which is no problem
17:39:09HesI'd very much like to plug in a compactflash card and copy my digital camera photos to the hard disk.
17:39:17webmindHes, i can do hardware.. i'm just a crappy coder :)
17:39:34HesI've replaced the disk... would be easy to connect another disk while the box is open
17:39:56webmindHes, which is the case with me
17:40:06Stevie[FP]I'm not up to learning the operation of an ATA driver
17:40:36Stevie[FP]sorry.
17:40:39webmindStevie[FP], it shouldn't be that hard for the person who coded the support for the 1st disk
17:40:41Hesbut more trickier to craft a cool, durable CF adapter to the case
17:40:49Hesthe ATA driver isn't very complicated
17:41:00Stevie[FP]webmind: but that wasn't me, so I really can't help

17:42:16Stevie[FP]yuck
17:42:18webmindHes, i dont use the casing
17:42:30webmindso a plain CF<->IDE adapter works fine

17:45:06Stevie[FP]why?
17:45:19webmind(and yes i have broken one hd lready by dropping it :)
17:45:37webmindStevie[FP], smaller.. and i had plan to fix a different casing.. but first plan for that failed
17:45:54webmindand well.. works fine
17:46:03webmindtested use of alkaline batts aswell
17:46:07HesHehe.
17:46:11Stevie[FP]that's not good
17:46:21Stevie[FP]they'll run at a significantly higher voltage
17:46:31webmindStevie[FP], they work fine
17:46:37webmindno problem, no overheating
17:47:03webmindit's most likely only 1v over spec
17:47:13webmindwhich shouldn't be a problem
17:47:46Stevie[FP]mmkay
17:47:57webmindand they last quite a while
17:49:09Stevie[FP]of course, your scheme would fail on the FM
17:49:40webmindwhy ?
17:50:04Stevie[FP]because it will try to charge your batteries when it's plugged in via USB
