22:59:09Erl_I've been reading the logs about what you've been doing reverse-engineering the gmini 220, and it looks very interesting.
22:59:32Erl_I'm considering getting one, and being able to hack the "os" would be really cool.
23:00
23:00:18Erl_...maybe I could help out at some point figuring out disassembled code or whatever.

23:01:22Erl_I thought I saw somewhere that there was a Cygnus gcc for the assembler of the Gmini, is that wrong?
23:01:35Erl_I saw you say earlier I think that there was no gcc for it.
23:03:07Erl_ping?
23:04:48McBillwhat is the most powerfull Archos product? (it is my next step)
23:05:12[IDC]Dragondefine powerful
23:05:26[IDC]Dragoncapacity? enrgy consumption?
23:05:26LaurentGErl_: that's the 120, not the 220 :)
23:06:02McBillDefine may mean full multimedia feature and more customized OS
23:06:08Erl_Ok, I thougth you were working on the 220. Hm. Do you know how similar the hw is?

23:06:14McBill*powerful I mean
23:06:17Erl_(comparing 120 and 220)
23:06:24LaurentGErl_: there's a gcc for it, but it has not been made public by Samsung, I found about in on a Korean university page
23:06:33 Quit pfavr ("ChatZilla 0.9.52B [Mozilla rv:1.6/1]")
23:06:53LaurentGErl_: but Strath has found a datasheet with the assembly language specs, so we can now write a gcc for it
23:06:56Erl_That's interesting in itself, wouldn't it be possible to force them to publish it due to the GPL?
23:07:17Erl_Many years ago I took a shot at writing a gcc back-end, and it was a pain.
23:07:47LaurentGErl_: the GPL only forces them to give the sources to people they give/sell the compiler, not to everyone
23:08:41Erl_I thought all modifications had to be published and contributed back to the project... But I may be wrong.
23:08:46LaurentGmoreover, there's also a non-gcc commercial compiler, that's the one they probably distribute
23:09:12Erl_But then again, frankly I think coding in assembler is underrated.
23:09:13LaurentGErl_: only to people to whom you give the binary
23:09:28Erl_But the first step has to be to write an assembler, I guess.
23:09:52LaurentGa disassembler I'd say, then an assembler ;)
23:11:08Erl_Right, but Strath has a first shot at a disassembler, right?
23:11:35Erl_Is your aim to port rockbox or write a sw pretty much from scratch?
23:13:17LaurentGI'd prefer to avoid reinventing the wheel ;)
23:13:24Erl_Actually the cpu I tried to write a back-end to gcc for years ago was also a 16 bit CPU, and that was part of the problem, I think gcc is much harder to port to a 16 bit CPU than 32 bit, because it pretty much assumes 32 bits as I recall
23:13:28LaurentGbut others might think differentely
23:13:50Erl_True (about the wheel), but I guess it depends on how well the wheel fits your cart, too :-)

23:15:44Erl_I don't know enough about Rockbox to know how it would suit smaller devices.
23:17:10LaurentGme neither
23:17:58Erl_I wonder if there might be other free C compilers that might be easier to port to a 16 bit CPU than gcc.
23:19:12LaurentGlcc maybe
23:19:27Erl_Yeah, I remember hearing about lcc.
23:20:12LaurentGbut, gcc was "ported" to 8 bits cpu, it can produce code for the z80, 6502 and 6809 as far as I know, so it's doable even if painful :)
