#rockbox log for 2005-12-25

00:00:29andrewmeli have the patch.exe open, now what?
00:01:31Bagderyou have a full dev environment and can build rockbox fine from source?
00:01:51andrewmelahhhhm, nope. i have looked at that, and thought it too much
00:02:01andrewmelbut i come back from cambodia late jan
00:02:07Bagderpatches are source code changes
00:02:32andrewmeland thought i would have a go at converting my java (small) and pascal (v. good but rusty) skills to c
00:02:38andrewmeland see what i can write.
00:02:39andrewmel:)
00:03:08andrewmelso i think i will leave that patch and hope it gets added before i get back
00:03:09Bagdernice
00:03:39andrewmeli am wanting to add .cfg browsing to the quick menu for the h3xx

00:05:07webguestHi
00:05:40andrewmelhey
00:05:49webguestIm looking to get an iPod soon. If Rockbox does work on the iPod, how will it read the MP3 files, since I understand they are stored in a special database on the iPod's HD.
00:06:11webguestif they are not in this database, then I understand the iPod can't access the MP3 files
00:06:39Bagdercirrect
00:06:41Bagdercorrect
00:06:51BagderRockbox on ipod doesn't use the itunesdb
00:07:18webguestso I can use drag-and-drop in My Computer, then iPod rockbox can play the files?
00:07:25Bagderyes
00:07:39Bagderat least once it starts working correctly ;-)
00:07:50webguestcool. I was thinking, when Rockbox works on the iPod, it would be awesome if you could choose the colour for your wps!
00:08:04Bagderof course
00:08:09Bagderthere are people working on that
00:08:11webguestfor example, choose text colour or background colour to your choice
00:08:22webguest;-)
00:08:23nathanhwebguest: you can do that right now
00:08:39nathanhwebguest: you can pick the foreground colour and background colour for any line on the display, they can even be rainbow coloured
00:08:42webguestAnd will the iPod WPS have peakmeters?
00:08:49webguestcool! Looking forward to it!
00:09:09Bagderwebguest: you can assume that ipod Rockbox will do as much as possible of what Rockbox can do on the other platforms
00:09:20webguestoh right
00:09:28Bagderat least if enough people join in
00:09:28webguestWell i'll keep my eye on the development.
00:09:33webguestye
00:10:07webguestIm just wondering what commands will be used to determine WPS colour, for example R53 G42 B23 (red green blue)
00:10:52nathanhthe patch on sourceforge uses %CfRRGGBB or %CbRRGGBB
00:11:24webguestok
00:11:35webguestim sure it will be much more idiot-proof when iPodbox is released
00:12:29muesli__ipodbox sounds nice ;)
00:13:16webguestyea ;-)
00:13:24webguestDoes anyone here already have an iPod?
00:13:47Bagderpreglow and linuxstb have done the ipod port work so far
00:13:55Bagderthey of course have ipods
00:14:02nathanhipod nano also ... whee
00:14:08nathanhi want rocknano
00:14:16webguestI was gonna ask how good battery life is
00:14:29Bagderit is a bit premature to ask that
00:14:41BagderRockbox doesn't yet work properly on ipod
00:15:21webguestI mean on the iPod in general
00:15:25Bagderah
00:15:29*Bagder has no clue
00:15:54nathanhgoogle will know
00:16:05Bagdermr google is a nice chap
00:16:12webguestyea he is
00:16:15webguestjust like you
00:16:17nathanhbit of a know it all though
00:16:19webguest;-)

00:17:17webguestIm torn between the white and the black iPods
00:17:48Paul_The_NerdWell, white is very iPod... but black is very "Oh, I don't want to have a _white_ iPod"

00:18:03Dwaynehi
00:18:07nathanhblack is teenage cool
00:18:13nathanheverybody knows red is the coolest
00:18:16webguest:)
00:18:27muesli__white ones look foolish like all others
00:18:35Paul_The_Nerdblack is only cool when accompanied by silver.
00:19:55andrewmelblack is also cool when there is a little blue button in the middle :)
00:20:05andrewmelit shows you did your homework
00:21:08muesli__you've got a strange school system down under ;)
00:21:44Paul_The_NerdI want an MP3 player embedded in an old pocket watch. Replace the clockwork, take the dial off and replace it with an LCD screen that shows the time but can also be switched to the file browser. That's *my* ideal MP3 player. Someone, go make one for me. Shoo.
00:22:44webguestThe world's smallest MP3 player is no bigger than a sugarcube
00:23:49webguesthttp://66.249.93.104/search?q=cache:MuOOWnl31rMJ:www.mobilewhack.com/reviews/mobiblu_dah1500_worlds_smallest_mp3_player_review.html+world%27s+smallest+MP3+player&hl=en&ie=UTF-8
00:24:39Paul_The_NerdIs that the mobiblu cube?
00:24:43webguestyea
00:24:47Paul_The_NerdBecause if it is, it's not actually the smallest
00:24:50webguestsaw it in my local Dixons the other day
00:24:54Paul_The_NerdThere's one that's a bit longer, but flat. It's less volume though
00:25:34Paul_The_NerdI kinda want the mobiblu 1gb cube just as a "neat thing to add to my keychain because it doesn't have enough gadgets on it yet"
00:26:11webguestyea but to make it that small, ur more likely to lose it or break it
00:27:07Paul_The_NerdThe cube is at least aluminum, which is nice.

17:17:53Paul_The_NerdOkay, got a Nano, put the bootloader on it. It *seems* to work fine, but then doesn't seem to load rockbox (and if I remove rockbox.ipod, it says loading original firmware, then sits on that screen.) So, hopefully someone to whom this is useful spots this in the log. (And hopefully it's really merely an error on my end.)

23:09:04linuxstbBagder: I'm glad you're around. I've been working on making the Rockbox build system use .bmp files directly instead of including the output of bmp2rb directly in the C files.
23:09:28Bagdera worthy task!
23:09:45linuxstbBasically, I've created a directory apps/bitmaps/ which includes the bmp files, a SOURCES file and a Makefile. This creates a libbitmaps.a
23:10:09CtcpIgnored 2 channel CTCP requests in 1 hour and 10 minutes at the last flood
23:10:09*Paul_The_Nerd is having issues with the ipodport.
23:10:37linuxstbAt the moment, this contains both bmps for core rockbox (just the splash logo) and plugins (just sudoku)
23:11:10linuxstbPaul_The_Nerd: Yes, I've seen your occasional messages. What's the problem?
23:11:19Paul_The_NerdI can't get past the bootloader at all
23:11:39Paul_The_NerdIt seems to install properly. I seen the logo/penguin and the various informations. If rockbox.ipod and .rockbox are present it says it's loading, then nothing happens.
23:11:55Paul_The_NerdIf rockbox.ipod is not present, it gives the -1 and says it's loading the original FW. Then nothing happens.
23:12:12linuxstbYes, loading the original firmware is broken at the moment.
23:12:15Paul_The_NerdAh
23:12:27linuxstbWhat is the last line displayed when it fails to load rockbox.ipod ?
23:12:35Paul_The_NerdThe one that says it's loading rockbox.
23:12:38Paul_The_NerdIt hangs on that line.
23:13:11linuxstbDo you have the 2GB or 4GB Nano?
23:13:14Paul_The_Nerd4gb
23:14:35linuxstbDoes Rockbox display the size and name of your flash disk correctly?
23:14:50linuxstb(I mean the bootloader)
23:15:16Paul_The_NerdI don't recall. I restored the original. If you'll be here when I get back, I'll reboot into linux and move it over. (I can't get my wifi drivers working on it, or I'd just use it.)
23:16:19 Quit gromit` (Read error: 104 (Connection reset by peer))
23:16:39linuxstbOne obvious question - is it a "winpod" or a "macpod"? (i.e. FAT32 or HFS)
23:16:45Paul_The_NerdFAT32
23:19:48Paul_The_NerdI'm using the bootloader from CVS. Are there changes to the code that haven't been committed yet? The IpodPort pages mention some code that isn't committed for the buttondriver yet, at least.
23:20:05linuxstbThat's out of date - the button driver has been committed.
23:20:14Paul_The_NerdAh
23:20:46linuxstbBut that's about it. My experimental audio code isn't committed, but that's all I think.
23:20:51Paul_The_NerdGotcha
23:21:15linuxstbI'm not sure what to suggest. We need to ask preglow to confirm that the CVS bootloader works with the CVS version of Rockbox on his nano.
23:21:28Paul_The_NerdGotcha
23:22:12linuxstbpreglow has a 2gb Nano - I hope that isn't the cause of the problem.
23:22:32Paul_The_NerdI seem to remember the size number starting with a 2, actually
23:23:33Paul_The_NerdBut I'm not really sure
23:26:22linuxstbBagder: There is one thing about the bmps I'm not sure of - whether to just have one large directory, or split it into apps/bitmaps and apps/plugins/bitmaps and then have libbitmaps.a and libpluginbitmaps.a
23:26:48Bagderlinuxstb: let's start with a single one
23:27:32Bagderof course plugins should be possible to separate so they should either be in the plugin dir in the future or in a plugins/bitmaps
23:28:22linuxstbAt the moment, there are no subdirectories in apps/bitmaps/ and there is a single SOURCES file covering both core and plugin bitmaps.
23:29:04linuxstbI think I'm tempted to split it now into apps/bitmaps and apps/plugins/bitmaps/
23:29:18linuxstbIf a plugin needs to use a "core bitmap", then we should export it via the plugin api.
23:29:19Bagderthat is probably a wise idea
23:29:55linuxstbIf I do that, then I'll put all the bmp Makefile code into tools/makebmp.inc
23:30:18Bagdernice

23:49:16Paul_The_NerdOkay, "Rockbox Loaded" is still the last line
23:49:25Paul_The_NerdAnd it reports partition 1 as 3820 mb, so that's right.

23:53:09linuxstbThe only thing I can suggest it to disable the cache in the bootloader. To do that, you need to comment out the call to ipod_init_cache in firmware/system.c
23:53:33linuxstbYou need to do that and then recompile the bootloader.
